When the temperatures outside get cold things heat up at the Second City Training Center! Winter Break camps are the perfect way to cut through the winter blues. Instead of seeing your student wither away on the couch watching hours of YouTube, get them up having a blast using their imagination.
Using improv games and exercise, our instructors will teach your student the basic tenets of improv such as ‘Yes And’, character, emotion, and object work with a curriculum designed specifically for the age of your student. Students will learn many soft skills that are valuable in any setting such as teamwork, active listing, and public speaking all while having a blast using their imagination to play improv games and create comedy scenes.
Winter Break Camps are for students ages 6-18 and are taught by skilled Second City instructors who are experts at creating a safe space where kids can get out of their comfort zones and really explore comedy. Great for class clowns or quiet kids, Second City's Winter Break Camps are a great way to instill confidence in your students no matter their age. Our instructor will work with these young improvisers to help enhance their ability to communicate with others and develop confidence in their own creativity while working as part of an ensemble.
Winter Break camps are three or five day long with camps running in late December and early January. One week camps will have an informal end of camp demonstration during the final 30 minutes of the last day of camp. Parents and guardians are invited to attend.
All students ages 8-18 will study improvisation through exercises that help to develop strong ensemble and character work. Develop stage presence as well as patience, self-confidence, good communication skills, and a respect for other performers and their creativity.
In the morning, all students will work on their Improv skills. In the afternoon, students ages 12-18 will learn Stand-up and ages 8-11 will learn Clowning. Stand-up will help your student develop their personal style as a Stand-up comedian as we focus on developing original material delivery and honing in on their sense of humor.
Clowning is 50% physicality, 50% silliness, and 100% fun. Yes, that doesn't make sense, but when it comes to clowning and comedy, it doesn’t need to! Kids will have the freedom of movement and self-expression in this class while also learning about slapstick comedy and how to theatrically control their gestures. It's all about maintaining control while retaining flexibility in performance.
Mini Camp is our Winter Break Camp for ages 5-7. This is a chance for our youngest comedian to get a taste of camp. Campers will spend each day in four classes: Improv, storytelling, clowning and theater arts. This is a great chance for new campers to see what a full day of fun at The Second City is all about.
