Teaching children to “think” mathematically

These days, a student requires more than just rote learning to excel in Math. At S.A.M, we focus on skills such as Critical Thinking, Heuristics, Logical Reasoning, Metacognitive Understanding, Modelling Techniques and Situational Word Problems, amongst others. Collectively, we call this as a Thinking Approach to learning Mathematics, or in short “Thinking Math.”

Throughout our program, from the way Trainers engage students in the Classroom, to the way questions are phrased and how solutions are presented in our Worksheets, we adopt this Thinking Approach. By the end of our program, S.A.M students will be well equipped with an array of Thinking Skills to confidently embrace future challenges in the world of numbers.

What we offer

  • We cater to children aged 4 to 12. Our focus is on young minds who can gain "accumulative advantage" from an early age. Research has shown that early exposure to math concepts and skills will enhance your child's confidence in Math in their later years.
  • Small class sizes (6:1) where trained instructors engage with students one-on-one. This ensures that each child learns at his or her own pace and does not "fall behind" the rest of the class.
  • We use the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) to embed concepts. At the concrete stage children learn concepts in a tactile way by using actual objects. The pictorial stage is where students visualize and draw diagrams to solve problems. Finally, the abstract is where they access abstract mathematical representations that we are all familiar with.
  • Our curriculum is thoughtfully constructed and varied to make the child think on every page rather than carry out mindless drills.
  • Comprehension is a critical component of understanding Math. Every workbook has a variety of word problems to stimulate thinking.
Why is Singapore Math the best choice?

Simply, the data supports it. Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study (TIMSS) and Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) conduct international benchmark exams in Math to help nations learn from each other in designing an educational system that benefits students. In fact, the US Common Core curriculum has heavily borrowed from Singapore, but the execution has been found wanting.

TIMSS assesses students' mathematical thinking in three cognitive domains: knowing, applying, and reasoning. Aside from topping the table for 20+ years, 54% of Singapore Math students achieved the highest proficiency (Advanced Benchmark) and 84% achieved the "High Benchmark". USA stood at 14% and 46% respectively and Russian Federation was a bit better at 20% and 61% respectively.
  • High Benchmark is defined as: "Students apply conceptual understanding to solve problems."
  • Advanced Benchmark is defined as: "Students can apply their understanding and knowledge in a variety of relatively complex situations and explain their reasoning."

This in a nutshell bears testament to the effectiveness of Singapore Math curriculum and pedagogy. And at SAM we bring this curriculum and pedagogy to students in the Chicago area.
