Chicago Cicada Events for Kids

Summer is upon us, and so are the cicadas! Here are some great Chicago area cicada events for kids and families to help you learn more about these rarely-emerging insects. Check out these kid-friendly activities and events that will help Chicago area kids learn more and celebrate the noisy cicadas that have invaded Illinois.


April 27 - August 4
Celebrating Cicadas
Dunn Museum, 1899 West Winchester, Libertyville
Coming to your forest preserves and yards: periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.)! In May 2024, 17-year cicadas will emerge from the ground by the millions to sing, mate and overwhelm their predators with sheer numbers. Periodical cicadas have a fascinating and mysterious life cycle—no one is certain why these cicadas emerge every 17 years. Discover the amazing life, sounds and benefits of this intriguing insect. May 19 - June 30
Periodical Cicadas: Special Exhibit
Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, 12545 West 111th St., Lemont
Periodical cicadas return to Northeastern Illinois. This special exhibit will help answer your buzzing questions about periodical cicadas. Open during regular hours. All ages. FREE.

June 1, 9am - 12pm
Cicada Adventures

Celebrate one of the most remarkable natural phenomena in the forest preserves and DuPage — the emergence of the 17-year cicadas — with fun activities and guided hikes that will give you a deeper appreciation for these quirky insects. All ages. FREE.

Cicada Celebration

June 8, 11am - 1pm
Cicada Brood XIII Takeover with Field Museum Entomologists
Harold Washington Library, 400 South State St., Chicago
See a fun and informative presentation by Dr. Maureen Turcatel and Jim Louderman from the Field Museum. They will discuss the Cicada Brood XIII emergence along with cicada specimens and live insects such as tarantulas and hissing cockroaches. There will be activity stations afterwards from 12pm - 1pm in the Thomas Hughes Children's Library. Ages 3 and up - For kids AND adults! FREE.

June 9, 12 PM - 4 PM
Cicadafest
Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, 21950 North Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods
Join us to celebrate all things insects and cicadas at this fun-filled event. We will have learning stations, insect demonstrations, a dress up booth for kids, insect collecting, a cicada search and much more! All ages. FREE.
