Halloween Arts & Crafts

Whether you're looking for a craft to do with your child at home, or for a group of kids at a party or at school, these Halloween arts and crafts will be a hit!

Paper Plate Bats

Supplies:

  • Paper Plates
  • Finger Paints
  • Glue/Glue stick
  • Construction paper
  • Stapler
  • White chalk
Begin by painting paper plates with black finger paint and let them dry. Cut triangle shapes out of black construction paper, cutting out three for each bat wing. Place them together and glue the top two corners of the triangles together. Once the wings are glued together, attach them to the back of the paper plate. Fasten the wings to the back of the paper plate with glue so that they stand out on either side. Turn the plate over, and use chalk to draw a face on the bat. When the bat is done, you can put a hole through the top of the plate and hang.

Paper Plate Pumpkins

Supplies:

  • Paper Plates
  • Finger Paints
  • Glue/Glue stick
  • Construction paper
Begin by painting paper plates orange. When the plates have dried, use fingerpaints to give the pumpkins a face. You can use white, yellow or black paint to draw the pumpkin's eyes, nose and mouth, or cut out these features from black construction paper. Once the pumpkin is dry, you can create a stem by cutting a rectangle from green construction paper and gluing it to the top of the pumpkin.

Paper Plate Spiders

Supplies:

  • Paper Plates - large and small
  • Finger Paints
  • Glue/Glue stick
  • Construction paper
Each spider will require one small and one large paper plate. Paint paper plates black and let them dry. When dry, paint a spider face onto the front of the smaller plate, which will be the spider's head. Once the head is dry, staple it to the front of the larger paper plate. To make the spider legs, cut strips of black construction paper and attach them to the spider's body with glue or staples.

Mini Jack-O-Lantern Patch

Supplies:

  • Mini pumpkins
  • Magic markers
  • Glue/Glue stick
  • Items such as yarn, glitter, buttons
  • Cotton balls
Children can decorate the mini pumpkins any way they like. They can glue on glitter, yarn or other items to decorate the pumpkins. They can also use markers to draw on faces. Once complete, you can set up several mini pumpkins in a bed of cotton balls to create a mini pumpkin patch.

Pipe Cleaner Spiders

Supplies:

  • Black and other colored pipe cleaners
Children can make spiders out of pipe cleaners, and put them into different positions. The body of the spider can be made by coiling up one or two pipe cleaners. The legs can then be attached by twisting the pipe cleaner legs to the body.

Halloween Puppets

Supplies:

  • Brown paper bags
  • Finger paints
  • Glue/Glue stick
  • Items such as yarn, glitter, buttons
The paper bags will be turned upside down to be used as the Halloween puppets. The bags can be decorated as different Halloween characters, including spiders, ghosts, witches and more. Kids can fingerpaint the faces onto the paper bags, or can glue items on including construction paper cutouts, yarn, buttons and more.

Sponge Painting

Supplies:

  • Sponges
  • Tempera paint
  • Construction paper
Buy several sponges and cut them into shapes ahead of time. You can cut out a round shape to be used for spider bodies or pumpkins, ghost shapes, and other geometric shapes for decoration. Kids will do their sponge painting by dipping the sponges into tempera paint and pressing onto construction paper. Have them try using white paint on black paper to make ghosts, or orange paint on black paper for pumpkins. Once the paper dries, kids can add accents with magic markers or finger paints.
