This was the first day of the Thai New Year's celebration, which lasts 3 days. I don't know much about the holiday itself, other than the fact that people celebrate by having a country-wide waterfight.
For these three days, people have carte blanche to go around throwing cold water on each other - it's legal to throw water on anyone but the police. There were vendors all over selling huge water guns in preparation, and apparently tourists are a prime target (and we stick out like sore thumbs) In addition to the people just walking around with water guns, kids and teens are driving around in huge pick-ups with industrial sized garbage cans full of water in the back, hosing people down with water bazookas. They throw big buckets of water on people, from pedestrians to bus riders with open windows. We chose cabs over the open-air tuk-tuks today.
The weather today was again around 100 with high humidity. Maureen and I took an early ride out of town to go to a floating market, riding in a motor canoe through canals to get there. It's basically a market where locals are shopping and bartering for goods, and it's a huge tourist attraction. After that we ended up yet again in a mall - it was too crazy and hot to walk around outside, so we went for the air-conditioning and a safe haven from the water-throwing. We had dinner at the Marriott - another buffet - but it was impossible to get anywhere else with all the celebrating going on.
